Abstract: First and second molar attrition scores of three ancient populations ——Taosi, Shangma and Yanqing were recorded using Scottπs dental attrition record system. Major axis regression analysis was used in molar attrition rate comparison. The ages of three groups date from late Neolithic to Spring and Autumn Period. These three groups were also distinguished by their economic systems: pastoralism in Yanqing and agriculture in Taosi and Shangma. Results show that there are attrition rate differences between groups in upper and lower jaws but no difference between male and female. The reason for these may be the occlusal relationships of upper and lower molars, dental physiological function of the teeth, and the difference in economic subsistance between the groups.
